Overview
INTERNET (ON-LINE) CLASSES: Online courses require students to have access to a computer with an individual e-mail account and access to the World Wide Web. Internet access is available to students in the College of the Siskiyous Learning Resources Center, located in the Library, if necessary, Learning Resources Center staff will assist students in creating an e-mail account. All coursework for this class is done online. Fire Technology offered on the Internet requires students to register prior to the first day of the Spring 2006 Semester, (1-19-06) in Admissions on campus or by phone. COURSE DATES: This course is conducted completely On-Line beginning 1-19-06. All assignments must be completed by 5-25-06. Students may complete the course by completing all assignments any time prior to 5-25-06.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course exposes the student to mechanized equipment operated by the men and women of the fire service and regulations pertaining to their use. Subject matter includes: driving laws, driving techniques, construction and operation of pumping engines, ladder trucks, aerial platforms, specialized equipment and apparatus maintenance. 3 Units Acceptable for credit: CSU
REQUIRED TEXTS: Introduction to Fire Apparatus and Equipment second edition, by Gene Mahoney. ISBN 9-912212-12-8 Available On-Line (item #345)
TERM PROJECT: Visit a fire station. Compare a front line apparatus to the same type reserve apparatus. Find ten significant differences between the two. Examples of significant differences include: the brand of the apparatus, type of pump, motor, brakes, cab, tank, transmission. Other significant changes may include a change of paint color, vehicle lighting, hose amount or size, pump panel location, wheelbase, seating arrangements, ladders, auxiliary generator, brush gear, large tools (jaws etc), intercom/ear protection etc. Include an explanation of why the changes were made. Include what changes are anticipated in future apparatus. Include the name, rank and phone number of the person you spoke with. Include the station's location and address. Include two photos of the apparatus you are comparing. The report will be typewritten and double spaced. The photos can be any size, but must be unmounted. Do not delay! Your term project is due before 5-18-06. (See below)
EXAMS: Quizzes at the end of each session are considered "open book", multiple choice exams. All exams have time limits. You have one opportunity to take an exam. The quiz questions will then be placed in a pool. The Midterm will consist of 50 multiple-choice type questions selected at random from the Midterm pool and the final exam will consist of 100 multiple-choice type questions selected at random from the Final pool. All exams will be taken on line.
GRADING: Weekly Assignments/Exams 415 points, Term Project (due before 5-18-06) 200 points

ATTENDANCE: The last day to drop classes and still receive a refund is 2-1-06. The last day to drop without a "W" is 2-13-06. Any student that has not completed all assignments by 5-25-06 and has not OFFICIALLY dropped will receive an "F" in the course.
